Disk Maintenance
Keeping it clean and tidy which keeps it quick and reliable

Hard Drive

First have you got loads of files (movies, pictures, documents) you don't need? if yes, delete them and don't forget to regularly empty your recycle bin.

Reason:- when you say yes to delete a file, it is still there, the icon or details may have vanished but the file is there (invisible to you) but now details of where it is are in the recycle bin.

go to "my computer". select "local disk" and right click. select properties. Is "Compress drive to save disk space" ticked if it is untick it, if it isn't don't ever tick it.

Reason :- this will allow you to get more on the disk but will slow it up
Explanation:- imagine you have an inflatable bed, because you want more space in your bedroom. So every night you go to bed, you have get it out, make sure there's enough space, position it, inflate it. And every morning you deflate it, pack it up and put it away. And if that isn't bad enough you keep putting more in your bedroom because you have the space, one night your bed won't fit and you'll have to get rid of stuff before you can get your bed out. And of course remember you also need more space because you need the space where it's stored as well the space it takes when inflated.

go to internet explorer, click tools in the top line, and then "internet options".
Now in "Temporary Internet files" click "Delete Files"
Reason:- this contains every image and page you've ever seen on the web and some you may not have ! This of course can be useful if you want to check something you saw on line without going back on line check where Internet Explorer is putting them in "Settings" default is usually "C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Local settings\Tempory Internet Files\" and look there.

go to "my computer". select "local disk" and right click. select properties. Look at the amount of free space if it's less than 15% the systems will struggle to do certain operation (take a long time or fail totally)

click on "Disk Cleanup" - this will give you a choice of thing you can get rid of.
when it's finished click on "Tools" and click on "Check Now", run this.
now click on "Defragment Now"

Reason:- this will speed up access to file for the CPU.
Explanation:- Imagine if you will your favourite magazine has serialized a story. Every time you want to read it you have to find it in the first mag and read that part then find the next mag and find it in that one and so on until you finish the story. Defragment takes these pages of story and stores them in one magazine as one complete story.
