IGNITION

I just heard about these so I've no knowledge of how good or otherwise they are. AccuSpark do a electronic replacement pack for points or a complete standard or electronic Distributor. I have ordered a kit (No 4) for a Lucas 25D4 dizzy and will report back with an update on how easy it is to fit and hopefully forget. I emailed the company and they couldn't tell me if my standard Rev counter would work with it but for less than £30 I thought it worth the risk. Watch this space.
The theory is you remove the dizzy take out the points and condenser and fit the unit together with a trigger ring and then refit it. Connect 2 wires one either side of the coil, as it needs a 12v supply and then retime the ignition, you could do this without taking out the dizzy but you'll still have to retime it so save yourself the hassle and remove the dizzy first.

UPDATE
My kit came, it fitted easily (off the car). The timing was out but it started easily and was soon timed correctly, and the standard rev counter works with it. Now I will have to remember to do an update and let you know if all goes well.
And 9 years later it still works. The worse bit about owning it is because lots of people online say they are cheap rubbish and will let you down I always expect it, but nothing to report as yet.
I was so impressed I bought an electronic Dizzy for my Marina engined A40, as with just replacing the points the engine needs retiming and I had to remove the drive gear and shift it one tooth as the dizzy was touching the oil filter and the timing wasn't quite right. That was nearly 6 months ago and again no problems to report. The thing I noticed with both of these, is they way the engine now rev smoothly at high revs, I'd always blamed valve bounce at top end but this cured it.

Leads

Go for the best thickness leads you can get. I use Hotwires (Silicon longlife High Performance) CS12, 2 x PS12 & 2 x PS16 but there are others out there. The only thing to go careful of is getting ones too thick to fit the cap. 7mm definitely fit but I will have to check if anything thicker does.  I use a side entry cap on a  Lucas 25D4, so I have to cut the ends off push them in the hole an pierce them with the screws.

Plugs

I usually use Champion N7YCC or an NGK equivalent.

Distributor Cap

Unless you've moved your engine or steering then your really stuck with a side entry one.

Drive Shafts

Generally we get these turned down till they clean up. If you look at a standard one it looks like someone started machining it and then realised it was time to go home and so did the ends and left the rest. It only runs at half rev but it's still out of balance so cleaning it will put it more in balance. It won't give you more power, it should stop a bit of wear in the dizzy bearing, not that I had one go.
